Let’s be honest. We have all been there. You open that email, click on the preview link with a little flutter of hope, and then… who IS this child? Because it is certainly not the kid you dropped off at school that morning. Maybe there is a mystery stain on the shirt. Maybe the smile looks like your child was told to say “cheese” at gunpoint. Maybe the background is a digital bookshelf that nobody asked for. Or perhaps your child doesn’t attend a traditional school that offers school portraits?
Even as a school portrait photographer in Hopkinton, MA know this feeling firsthand. When my son was 8, his school portraits came back with a stain on his shirt and a “smile” so forced that his grandparents genuinely did not recognize him. And now, with a high school son who is not attending a traditional school, I found myself thinking – he will not even get the chance to have school pictures at all. Those two experiences led me to one very clear conclusion:
Whether your child is homeschooled, enrolled in a virtual program, part of a learning pod, or just had a really rough picture day this year, the result is the same: you are left without a photo you actually want to display.
And that matters. These annual portraits are milestones. They are the images that fill your photo wall, get sent to grandparents, and eventually end up in a box that your kid will flip through someday and laugh (or cringe) over.
Skipping them entirely – or settling for something you would rather hide in a drawer – is not the only option.

Here is where I will be straightforward with you, because I think it is worth saying plainly.
School photographers move fast. Your child gets one chance to nail that smile before the next kid steps up. By comparison, I typically take 20 or more images of a single child during a portrait session. From those, I choose favorites, edit and upload everything so you can choose your favorites. There is no pressure, no rushing, and no single moment that has to be perfect.
School portraits are one child at a time, full stop. When I photograph children privately, sibling shots are a priority – both together and individually. Some of my favorite images come from those in-between sibling moments, the quick glance, the shared giggle, the shoulder bump. Those are the ones parents end up loving most.
Digital bookshelves. Chalkboards. Brightly colored geometric shapes. I am teasing a little here, but only a little. The options available through traditional school photographers are not exactly what most families would choose if given a real choice. The plain white backdrop that I will use allows your student to be the center of attention.
My goal is to capture your child’s true personality, letting them express themselves in front of my camera. They can be a great way to celebrate a child’s unique character and charm, and can help build confidence.

These sessions are a great fit for:
If any of those descriptions sound familiar, keep reading.

These are NOT your average school photos. I want to say that clearly because it shapes everything about how the session feels.
Say goodbye to awkward smiles, bright lights, and backdrops that look like someone’s screensaver. These sessions are relaxed and playful, and my goal is to capture your child as they actually are right now, in this moment, at this age.
Sessions take about 5 minutes per child. Siblings are photographed together and individually. There is no stress, no stiff posing, and no hoping your kid does not go full robot in front of the camera (again).
I call these All About Me portraits – because that is exactly what they are. Focused on your child, as they are, right now.

I have photographed families long enough to know that these images carry real weight. A photo taken of your child at age 6 is not just a cute picture. It is a record of who they were. The gap in a tooth, the particular way they tilt their head, the shirt they insisted on wearing every single day that week.
Time moves fast. A year from now, your child will be different. And the photo you skipped taking – or the one stuffed in a drawer – will not be there to tell that story.
That is why I started offering these sessions. Not as a workaround or a consolation prize, but as a genuine alternative for families who want more than what the school gym backdrop has to offer.
All About Me portrait sessions are now available in Hopkinton, MA.
Here is what is included:
And here is the part that surprises people: those sessions are not always as affordable as they seem. When you factor in what you are actually getting – one image, minimal options, a photo that is merely “okay” – the value just is not there. Spending a little more for several images you will genuinely cherish is a decision I hear parents feel great about, consistently.
These sessions are simple, personal, and genuinely fun. No fuss. No stress. Just your kid, being exactly who they are.
Reach out to learn more or get on the schedule. I would love to help you fill that spot on your photo wall with something you are actually proud to frame.
And trust me – once you see the results, you will wonder why you ever left it up to the school photographer in the first place.
