I’ll say the quiet part out loud. What many photographers won’t tell you. When most people see a Boston photographer’s pricing for the first time, the reaction is some version of that much? And I get it. From the outside, it looks like you’re paying a lot of money for one hour of someone pointing a camera at you.
But that one hour is the shortest part of the whole thing. What goes into a session, before, during, and after, is the part clients never see. And that’s exactly where the confusion starts.
A while back, a client looked at me after I mentioned my pricing and told me, with genuinely wide eyes, that I made more money than his cardiologist. He apologized later, which I appreciated. But the comment stayed with me, because it pointed to something real. Most people think they’re paying for the hour they see me.
They’re not.
Around the same time, I raised my prices for sessions. When I walked one mom through the full experience, she didn’t hesitate. She told me this moment in her daughter’s life was priceless, and what mattered was the experience, the expertise, and capturing this one chapter before her daughter stepped into adulthood.
Two very different reactions to the same number. Both taught me something.

It isn’t a checklist of deliverables. It’s a few things that are hard to put on a price sheet.
The experience. I spend one-on-one time with every client before we ever meet on location. We talk through styling, location, and what feels right for your family or your senior. By the time you show up, you’re not anxious. You’re actually looking forward to it. That doesn’t happen by accident. Parents too. Read here for more: A Parents Guide to Senior Photos!
Over 10 years of knowing what I’m doing. When I started out, I had no artistry and no experience. I didn’t know the best hours to shoot or how to work with light so it feels natural and glowing instead of harsh. That came from years of education, hundreds of sessions, and plenty of trial and error. These days I don’t pray for shade because it’s easier. I embrace the sun and know how to work with it.
The hours you never see. Every client gets 8+ hours of my time from first contact to final gallery. That’s the inquiry and consultation, pre-session planning, location scouting, the session itself, culling and editing, and gallery delivery. The one hour you see me is the tip of the iceberg.
Location scouting as its own job. Finding the right light in the right spot for your family or your senior takes real time. It’s conversations with other local Boston photographer, a spontaneous stop at a field I spotted on the way home from the grocery store, or hours researching a location a client requested that I’ve never shot. It’s genuinely part of the work.

I’ll say it plainly. Professional gear is expensive, and it’s only one piece of the overhead.
One camera body and one lens can run $3,000+. Add backup batteries, memory cards, a second body, reflectors, and more lenses. Then editing software, culling software, client management systems, slideshow subscriptions, and insurance. When I added up everything I own, and I truly believe my setup is on the modest end, it topped $20,000.
Beyond gear, running a photography business solo means wearing every hat there is. I’m the secretary, the finance director, the art director, the stylist, the location scout, the marketer, the social media manager, the educator, and yes, the photographer.

The sticker shock usually comes from comparing my pricing to other photographers without knowing what the experience actually includes. As a photographer in Boston, I can tell you its not cheap!
I have a very high return rate. Families come back year after year, not just because they like the photos, but because of how they felt during the session. The fun they had. Kids actually laughing instead of stiff-posing their way through it. Mom finally in the frame.
If you walked in already knowing you’d have an amazing time, that I’d handle styling, location, and all the prep so there’s zero anxiety, the pricing would feel a lot less like a number and a lot more like an investment in something worth having.
I completely understand everyone has a budget, and I respect that. All I’d gently ask is this. Before deciding a photographer is unreasonable, consider what’s actually in that number. It’s rarely just the hour.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably thinking seriously about booking, or trying to figure out whether the investment makes sense for you. I’d love to walk you through what a session actually looks like from start to finish.
Whether you want joyful, real family photos that feel like you, or you’re planning your senior’s portraits before this chapter closes, I’d love to connect.
Reach out through saramaida.com and let’s start the conversation. No pressure, no obligation. Just two people figuring out if we’re a good fit. Hope to see you on the other side of the lens.
