You’ve booked your session, you’re excited — and then what? How do you prepare for senior portraits? Maybe you’ve spent weeks thinking about locations and outfits. Then the day arrives and somewhere between the excitement and the nerves, a few small prep details get skipped. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen more times than I can count.
The good news? Knowing how to prepare for senior portraits makes it completely avoidable.
Let’s be honest: most of the focus before a senior session goes toward picking outfits and choosing a location. Hair, makeup, and skincare prep often get left to the last minute — or worse, get skipped entirely because it feels like an extra step.

But here’s what I know after photographing seniors year after year: the camera sees everything. Great lighting and a beautiful location can only do so much. When you show up feeling confident, polished, and comfortable in your own skin, that energy comes through in the images in a way that no editing can replicate.
This post is your complete guide to how to prepare for senior portraits — so you walk in feeling ready, not stressed, not scrambling, and definitely not wearing pants that are four sizes too big (more on that in a minute).

I had a senior show up to her session after getting a spray tan the day before. In theory, great idea. In practice? She was a shade of orange that no camera setting in the world was going to fix.
Spray tans can absolutely be part of your prep — I’m not here to talk you out of them. But timing matters a lot. Give it 4 to 7 days before your session so the color has time to settle and even out. A spray tan done too close to your session can look unnatural on camera, and that’s the last thing we want when we’re working hard to capture the most authentic version of you.

Short answer: yes, and if I had to pick just one, get your makeup done professionally.
Here’s why. A professional makeup artist knows exactly how much product the camera needs to see. It’s almost always more than you think — and I’ve had girls show up feeling a little uncertain about how their makeup looks in person, only to be completely thrilled once they see themselves in the images. The camera picks up depth and dimension in a way that makes professional makeup look absolutely stunning on screen.
Hair is a little different. A lot of girls can pull off beautiful curls themselves these days, thanks to YouTube and other tutorials. So if budget is a consideration, that’s a reasonable place to save.
As for cost, you can typically get your makeup done professionally for under $100. That’s a solid investment when you consider everything you’ve already put into booking, planning, and preparing for this session.
I also have a few local artist recommendations I’m happy to share — just reach out and I’ll point you in the right direction.

This is the big one. The thing that, when it gets skipped, I can see it the moment a client arrives.
Try on your outfits before your session. All of them.
I had a senior boy show up excited for his second outfit — the one he was most looking forward to — only to discover he had purchased pants four sizes too big. At the session. When it was too late to fix it.
It’s not just about fit, either. Here’s a quick checklist before your session:
That said, I come to every session fully prepared for small fixes — clothing clips, a tide-to-go stick, and even a tag gun for those bras that refuse to cooperate. So don’t panic if something small comes up. But the big stuff, like fit and comfort, is worth checking ahead of time.

Senior portraits aren’t just photos for a yearbook. They’re a record of who you are right now — your personality, your confidence, your style. You’ve worked hard to get to this point, and you deserve images that reflect all of that.
When you know how to prepare for senior portraits, something shifts. You’re not distracted by a waistband that doesn’t fit or wondering if your tan looks weird. You’re just… present. And that’s when the best photos happen — when you’re relaxed, laughing, and fully yourself.
I want every senior who works with me to walk away feeling proud of those images. That starts before we even pick up a camera.
