Senior year is a LOT. Coursework, social dynamics, sports, extracurriculars – and if college is in the picture, add campus visits, applications, acceptance letters, financial aid packages, and approximately one million decisions on top of that. By the time college actually arrives, decision fatigue is real. Trust me, I hear this from so many moms and seniors, and it got me thinking: what if I could just take some of those decisions off your plate? What if I used my resources to create the ultimate college packing list?
So I did!
I went straight to the source – my Instagram DMs – and reached out to past clients & their parents to ask what they actually considered must-haves for their college dorms. What came back was a mix of genius finds, small things most people don’t think about, and a few “why didn’t anyone tell me this sooner” moments. Add in a little of my own internet sleuthing (you know how it goes – type “dorm essentials” once and suddenly every ad and college prep influencer is living on your feed), and here we are.
This is your no-stress, click-and-add-to-cart guide. Read it, see what you need, and let’s make move-in day feel a little less like a full-time job.
The Dorm Essentials List (Recommended by Real Seniors & Their Parents)
These aren’t random picks pulled from a generic shopping guide. These came directly from past clients – seniors who’ve already lived the dorm life and parents who wished someone had handed them this list first. I’ve organized them by category so you can work through it without losing your mind.
Sleep and Comfort
Gel Mattress Topper– Dorm mattresses are notoriously rough. This is the upgrade your sleep schedule deserves. You cant skip alot of things, but everyone agreed, this is NOT one of them!
Full Body Pillow– Great for comfort, reading in bed, or just having something cozy when home feels far away. There are loads out there, but this one a client told me was better than any pillow her friends have and everyone steals it.
Foldable Sofa Chair– This one is definitely a splurge, but it provides not only a comfy chair to hang, but a spot to sleep for those late night study sessions. People have raved about this ones comfort and say its worth the cash!
Space Saving Hangers – Tiny closets require creative solutions. These are a must.
Hoodie Hanger– The hoodies take up space and a lot of it. Everyone who has these says they are the best thing in their closer!! Specifically designed for bulkier items. Genius and simple.
Over the Door Organizer – Adds storage without taking up any floor space – the students who responded said they loved this one specifically because it fit shoes with its deep pockets! Here is a second option as well!
Shoe Organizer– Keeps your floor clear and your shoes accessible.
Rolling Storage – Easy to move, easy to tuck under a bed or desk.
If you can lift it up on risers, check these out.And check out my next tip for even better idea
Zip Ties – Use these to connect storage bins or organize cords under the bed. Small item, big impact.
Moving Bags– Way more flexible and space-efficient than boxes for getting there in the first place.
Another option that is great for both moving in and weekend trips home (hello mamas!) is the Hulken Bag on Wheels! Recommended by at least 75% of the responses I got!
Portable Lock Box– This is one I would not have thought of and came from alot of the moms. Keep your phone, keys, important documents safe.
Foldable Bedside Table– A surface right where you need it, when you need it most. Everyone said they kept their phone, waterbottles and maybe a portable speaker there for when they slept!
Laundry and Bathroom
Laundry Backpack– I wish I had one of these during my BU days. The trips to the 1st floor machines would have been SO much easier! Save the hands, use the backpack!
Quick Drying Towel with Loops– Hangs easily, dries fast, and takes up a fraction of the space of a regular towel. Need I say more?
Ambiance and the Personal Touch
Fairy Lights with Clips – Makes a dorm feel like a home. If the girls I asked didn’t havet hese, they wanted them when I asked.
Mini Projector – Movie nights in a tiny room? Absolutely. Yes this is a SPLURGE but your dorm will become the IT room according to my sources…
Portable Monitor – A bigger screen for studying, streaming, or both at the same time. This is a great alternative to the Mini Projector and one that kids all said they used daily. Provides a way to make their IPhone screens bigger to watch Netflix, etc!!
WOOZOO Air Circulator Fan – When it came to a room fan, this one was UNANIMOUS. Whisper-quiet, powerful, crazy 3D oscillation (side-to-side and up-and-down), five speed settings, remote control…what more could you want from a small desk fan!
Instant Camera – Don’t just use the Iphone and it can provide the photos for the Fairy Lights with Clips Above. Treasure the memories and PRINT them!
Health and Wellness
First Aid Kit – Because you are now the adult who needs to have one of these.

Why This List Actually Matters
Senior year is full of moments that feel huge – and they are. But so is this one. The transition from your family’s home to your own space is something you’ll remember for a long time, and setting yourself up well from the start makes a real difference in how that first month feels.
I don’t have a senior yet myself, but I work with seniors and their families all the time, and I see how much energy goes into this season. The last thing anyone needs is to get to move-in day and realize they forgot something that would have made daily life so much easier.
So consider this list a gift from the seniors and parents who came before you, passed along with care.
