1. Get the hubbies on board!
I have been in Boston Family Photography business long enough now that I can say with great certainty, that fathers make the session. And I truly believe that it starts with knowing what to expect. We all know that men want to feel prepared and know what they are in for. What they are in for is FUN — a relaxed environment where we aren’t looking for perfection, just for them to be themselves, have some snuggles with their kiddos (and maybe some tickling!). Show your hubby my IG page, tell him we are there for fun and it should help ease his mind!
2. Show your kids my photo, let them get to know me
You know your kids best — so let them get to know me a little before our session. Show them my Instagram feed (link) and how much fun the kids are having in these photos. Let them see my pictures on my website (link), so they know what I look like. Sometimes the more “familiar” I am to them, the easier it is. But don’t worry, there hasn’t been a kid I couldn’t win over yet!
3. Keep it light and positive
We are there to have fun. To capture moments. To twirl, jump, dance and snuggle. The more tension we have, the more tense our kids are. I have learned the hard way with my own kids — the easier going I am, the more natural they are!
4. Bring music that your kids love, jam out in the car and maybe during the session
What better way to relax and get in the mood than jamming to your favorite tunes? Music creates the mood, helps you forget the stress. I will always have my phone on me and if you or your family want some special tunes to jam to during the session, never hesitate to ask. I look to 90s rap to help, so I will leave the music selection to you!
5. Plan a special reward for the entire family
Some families go to a favorite restaurant for dinner, or toy store to pick out a prize for good behavior. Maybe an ice cream cone! Documenting your family’s memories is such an important part of your history, but it also takes planning on your part. While your beautiful photos will be a reward down the road, give yourself an immediate treat. You deserve it!
